Gavalas Santorini Mavrotragano



Another indigenous varietal from Santorini that almost went extinct. “Mavro” translates to black and “tragano” translates to crispy. This describes the dark berries from this varietal that have crispy, delicate skins they produce a wine with an intense deep red color and ‘crisp’ acidity. Alongside concentrated aromas of red fruits with hints of leather and tobacco, this red has delicate and velvety tannins. It is an ideal accompaniment to game, meat with red sauces, spicy casseroles, and cheese. The production for this prestigious wine is strictly limited as this rare variety covers only 2% of the vineyard in Santorini and has only recently been recently. The wine matures in French oak barrels for a period of 12 months prior to bottling.

Gavalas Winery: Gavalas family winery is one of the oldest wineries in Santorini. In the traditional village of Megalochori, the fourth generation of winemakers aims at highlighting the unique characteristics of Santorini’s terroir. The family-owned winery celebrates local varieties and only produces limited quantities of wine every year. Gavalas winery vinifies the most vibrant variety in Greece, Assyrtiko, as well as Aidani, Mandilaria and Mavrotragano. It is the only winery in Santorini that vinifies the indigenous rare varieties of Katsano and Voudomato.
